VAT invoice vs normal invoice: what is the difference?

A VAT invoice contains more information than a standard non-VAT invoice. GOV.UK says VAT invoices must be used where both supplier and customer are VAT registered. A normal invoice still has its own required information.

A standard invoice

The standard checklist includes a unique invoice number, supplier and customer details, description, supply and invoice dates, charges, applicable VAT and total owed.

A VAT invoice

VAT invoices have additional requirements. The exact information can depend on the type of VAT invoice, so VAT-registered businesses should check current HMRC rules rather than simply adding a VAT line to a normal invoice.

Do not imply VAT registration

A business should not present itself as charging VAT unless that is appropriate. The builder can help structure an invoice, but the user remains responsible for correct tax treatment.
